Clazomenae (Klazomenai in Turkey) was an ancient Greek city of Ionia and a member of the Ionian Dodecapolis (Confederation of Twelve Cities), it was one of the first cities to issue silver coinage.
The city of Phokaia (modern Foça) was settled early in the 1st millennium BC, probably by Aeolians and then Ionians and reached its high point in the 5th century BC. There had, however, been earlier occupation on the site dating back to at least the Middle Bronze Age and it continued to be occupied throughout antiquity and up to the present. Excavations at the site were conducted by Felix Sartiaux in 1913 and 1920 and by Ekrem Akurgal in 1951-55. It is now being excavated by Ömer Özyiğit.

The ancient Greek name of the city was Thera (Θήρα) meaning, gate or doorway.
