Painting and Sculpture Museums in Turkey

The first Art and Sculpture Museums where the products of the plastic arts were displayed, goes back about 200 years, which was protected and opened at the Heir’s Quarters of the Dolmabahçe Palace in 1937, upon a directive from Atatürk.

There are 3 Art and Sculpture Museums within the organizational structure of the Ministry of Culture, connected to the General Directorate of Fine Arts. The Art and Sculpture Museums located outside Ankara carry out their activities under the patronage of the Provincial Cultural Directorates of their particular city. (more…)

Turks living in Central and Asia Minor have made sculptures for different reasons in the pre-Islamic time. After the acceptance of Islam, sculpture with religious quality and worship purposes were prohibited. It is known that the Turkish tribes on the steppes of Central Asia produced ‘animal style’ pictures, so called because of their subject matter. After the adoption of Islam, representational art was little used, on account of religious prohibitions, and decorative arts developed in its stead.
